Naresuan University Joins Forces with 15 Institutions to Seek ABET Accreditation for Engineering Programs, Elevating Thailand’s Engineering Workforce by 2025

 

On January 9, 2024, Assistant Professor Dr. Sirichai Tanrattanawong, Vice President for Infrastructure and Information Technology, and Assistant Professor Dr. Kamphon Subsomboon, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Naresuan University, came together to sign a memorandum of understanding for academic cooperation. This collaborative effort is part of a project aimed at securing accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the United States by 2025. The initiative involves the Ministry of Education and 15 higher education institutions, including Naresuan University.

A total of 56 courses are under scrutiny to enhance the standards and quality of education in Thai engineering programs, aligning them with global benchmarks. The signing ceremony, presided over by Mr. Permsuk Sajjapiwat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (OHEC), saw the presence of esteemed figures such as Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, administrators, faculty members, and curriculum administrators. The event took place at Ballroom A, Pathumwan Princess Hotel, Bangkok.

The memorandum of understanding marks a crucial step in the larger initiative to drive Thai higher education institutions towards ABET accreditation by 2025. The collaborative effort involves 16 institutions, including Mahidol University, Chiang Mai University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Kasetsart University, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, Suranaree University of Technology, Khon Kaen University, Chulalongkorn University, Srinakharinwirot University, Prince of Songkla University, Mahanakorn University of Technology, Panyapiwat Institute of Management, Burapha University, and Walailak University.

This collective endeavor aims to not only elevate the standard and quality of education in Thai engineering programs to be on par with world-class universities but also plays a pivotal role in the internationalization of Thai higher education. It positions Thailand as a regional center and enhances the acceptance of Thai engineering personnel on the global stage. Additionally, it expands opportunities for collaboration and ensures future professional benefits for students.
