Naresuan University (Thailand) and Shinshu University (Japan) Strengthen Their Collaborations on Joint Symposia and Research Projects at SU’s Matsumoto and Nagano Campuses

 On 28-29 March 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Sarintip Tantanee, President of Naresuan University (NU), Thailand, led NU administrative team comprising (i) Professor Dr. Kornkanok Ingkaninan, Vice President for Research and Innovation Development; (ii) Dr. Yutthapong Tongpob, Assistant to the President for Research and Innovation Development; (iii) Associate Professor Dr. Usa Padgate, Assistant to the President for International Affairs; (iv) Associate Professor Dr. Krongkarn Chootip, Dean of the Graduate School; (v) Assistant Professor Dr. Piriya Narukhutrpichai, Dean of Faculty of Medicine; (vi) Assistant Professor Dr. Saisiri Merasena, Dean of Faculty of Medical Science; (vii) Associate Professor Dr. Sutisa Thanoi, Deputy Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Faculty of Medical Science; and (viii) Associate Professor Dr. Sukunya Ross, Assistant Dean for Public Relations and International Affairs, Faculty of Science, in a visit to Shinshu University (SU), Matsumoto and Nagano campuses, Japan.

      On the first day of the visit at SU (28 March 2023), the NU team discussed with Professor Dr. Soichiro Nakamura, President of SU, Professor Dr. Shinichi Yonekura, Vice-President for International Planning and Strategy, and other SU administrative team members at Matsumoto campus on ongoing and future projects to (i) continue a strong university-level agreement between both universities, (ii) enhance the long-standing and strong relationship between Faculties of Engineering of both universities; (iii) expand further research and academic collaborations (especially for Faculties of Medicine, Science, Medical Science, Humanities and Social Sciences), (iv) exchange research and academic staff and students in the form of internships, and (v) create potential joint symposia and research projects.

      After the President’s reception, the NU delegation visited Faculty of Science for a lab tour with the intermediation of Professor Dr. Hirosuke Tatsumi (Presenter), Professor Dr. Kohki Yoshida (Dean), Professor Dr. Dai Tamaki (the next Dean) and Professor Dr. Igor Trushin, and Institute for Biomedical Sciences and School of Medicine with the intermediation of Professor Dr. Naoki Tanaka (Presenter) and Professor Dr. Yuji Shiba (for a Biomedical Lab tour).

      In a visit to Faculty of Engineering, the NU delegates were shown the state-of-the-art facilities of SU laboratories including the world-renowned laboratory of the Endo Group. The visit was guided by Professor Dr. Yoshihiko Amano (Dean), Special Emeritus Professor Dr. Morinobu Endo, Professor Dr. Kiyoshi Tanaka (former Vice-President), Professor Toshiro Sato (Council Member), Professor Dr. Mizue Kayama (Council Member), Professor Dr. Nobuhiko Henmi (Director of International Relations), Professor Dr. Toshio Sakai (Vice-Director of International Relations), Associate Professor Dr. Makoto Abe, Associate Professor Dr. Masakazu Kataoka, and Assistant Professor Dr. Satomi Tagawa. Following the laboratory visit, the NU team paid a courtesy call to Senior Assistant Professor Dr. Mitsuru Hamano and Assistant Professor Dr. Amanda Schuetze at Center for Global Education and Collaboration.

      On the second day of the SU visit (29th March 2023), the NU delegation discussed further research projects with Faculty of Engineering at SU’s Nagano Campus. Professor Dr. Nobuhiko Henmi gave a comprehensive presentation on the long-standing partnership between SU and NU, and illustrated descriptions of past collaborations with memorable photographs which led to a lively discussion of potential future collaborative projects. The meeting was also attended by Special Emeritus Professor Dr. Morinobu Endo, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by Naresuan University in 2015. The following Research Group Labs were then visited: Abe RGL, Amano-Mizuno-Tagawa RGL, Kataoka RGL and the International Center for Science and Innovation (AICS).

      The two parties made plans to discuss the possibility of further cooperation in detail. After a pleasant conversation, the delegates took commemorative photos together.
